SEVERE
WEATHER DEFINITIONS: A
TORNADO WATCH is issued by the national Weather Service when conditions
are such that tornadoes could develop. A
TORNADO WARNING is issued by the National Weather Service when a tornado
has actually been sighted or indicated by radar.
Move to a safe place immediately and take a battery powered radio
with you. Remain in storm shelters
or a place of safety until an “all clear” announcement is given. TORNADO SAFETY PROCEDURES: ·
Seek shelter immediately. Protect
your head and eyes. Lie flat
and make as small a target as possible. ·
Stay away from windows to avoid danger from flying glass or debris.
Go to the basement. If you have no basement, go to a first
floor bathroom or closet at the center of the house (apartment). Lie flat under heavy furniture or a mattress. ·
Mobile homes should be abandoned immediately. If there is no reinforced shelter nearby,
take cover in a ditch or depression. ·
In schools, stay away from windows and large unsupported areas such
as auditoriums or gyms. In a
reinforced school building, go to an interior hallway on the lowest
floor. ·
In public buildings, go immediately to a designated shelter area or
to an interior hallway on the lowest floor, away from windows. Do not go to your parked car! ·
In open country, move away from the approaching tornado at right angles.
If there is not time to fine suitable shelter, leave your car
and lie flat in a ditch or depression. Avoid large trees, metal poles and other possible
electrical conductors. After
a storm, avoid touching downed electrical wires. ·
Do not leave your shelter
or place of safety until the storm threat is past! ·
Malls tenants should take
shelter in lower hallways or under the stairs in the lower hallways. If you live on the ground level, your bathtub
is the safest place. |
